Learn How to do a Headstand And Avoid These Mistakes

Headstand is one of the most important and difficult poses among yoga poses. It helps in the flow of blood to the brain in an increased manner. It helps to build the strength of arms, core muscles and shoulders. It also helps to gain stamina and energy as well as prevents hair loss. While starting headstand for the first time, many beginners feel nervous, or they are afraid of going inverted. Many beginners very feel weak balancing their body while doing handstand practice. So this article is about headstand for beginners. Building core strength and upper body The very first thing to do even before trying headstand is building some strength in core and upper body. Dolphin is an exercise which can be done to prepare for arm balances and headstand. For practicing dolphin, a person has to come to a plank position on all hands and legs. Then both the palms are to be joined, and the forearms are to be placed on the mat. Then the next step is lifting the lower body up and then coming out towards the hand on an inhalation. This step can be repeated 8 to 10 times daily for around three weeks. Learning proper placement Many beginners while doing and headstand often do a mistake that is the hand placement. Many students rest their heads in their hands with open palms which is wrong. The head is to be placed at the base of the palms near the wrist. The right positioning can be felt by coming into a kneeling position. Support wall Beginners can do handstand training using a wall for support. The next step is to come into the position with all fours as discussed in step 1. Then the head is to be placed in the right position, and the lower body is to be lifted. After lifting the core is to be pressed towards the wall. Then the person has to walk in the wall and slowly bring the whole body straight. To relax the knees need to be brought to the chest slowly and then to be touched to the floor. This is to be practiced for a couple of days, and after sometime when the core feels strong, it can be done without the support of a wall. Headstand can be done properly if practiced properly and regularly following the proper steps as there are many mistakes beginners perform while doing a headstand. Mistakes Beginners should know how to learn handstand by following above steps and avoid the below mentioned mistakes. • Placement of head – The first thing to make sure is to measure the head placement. The palm base is to be bought at the center of the eyebrow, and the head is to be put where the middle finger meets the mat. The shoulders are to be kept away from ears by bringing the elbows down and the legs up. If the shoulders come too close to the ears then the posture will become round and the person will roll backwards. • Hopping up – A beginner should not just hop up while doing this pose. Proper time should be given to strengthen the base and after that only hopping up should be done otherwise it can lead to serious injuries. • Overloading the neck – Shoulders and forearms should be used properly to manage weight, and minimum load should be put on the neck. Overloading the neck can cause serious injuries. At the beginning part the weight should be spread as neck would be fragile and some time should be given to strengthen the neck. • Positioning of the elbow – For creating a sturdy and strong base the elbows have to be hugged in and should be kept with a same width as the shoulders. • Holding breath – It shouldn’t be done in any case. Yoga is all about flow of energy with the help of breathing. Holding the breath while doing a headstand can stop energy flow and make the person feel light headed and can also lead to popping of blood vessels that tend form red dots in face. The breathing process should be smooth and natural. All these above mention handstand exercises should be done with regular practice without any mistakes to perform a proper headstand.
